#100DayProject Reboot

box of white cotton bolls

I'm changing my #100dayproject from art journaling to cotton growing and spinning. Over the next 100 days you get to watch as I turn that box of 50 100%  natural cotton bolls, grown in North Carolina at the farm of cottonman.com .  While at the same time I am planting and hopefully growing two cotton plants/bushes here in Northeastern Ohio.  Its true that you can grow cotton in cooler regions, it just has to be started earlier and indoors.   Cotton needs 120-180 days of frost free weather.  It thrives in full sun (6+ hours of sun), temperatures above 70F, and consistently moist well drained soil.  These are not conditions that are consistently available in Northeast Ohio. its the 3rd week of May and our temperature average is still in the mid-50's F.  Not ideal tropical plant conditions.  But other people have grown cotton in this part of the country so I'm going to give it a shot.  What's the worst that can happen?

In the cotton growing corner:  I soaked the 6 seeds for 24 hours.

Next, I planted them in starter pots.  Now we wait for them to germinate.

In the spinning basket I am spinning the cotton directly from the seeds.  I have spun one complete cotton boll and have about 11 yards of thick & thin cotton.  Its quite overspun (has too much twist), that's why its so very curly looking.  The next one will be better.
11 yards of curly over spun cotton
first try at handspinning cotton.  11 yards.
